Empowering Tomorrow’s Drivers: Y Drive Receives Vital Funding Boost from Advance Ashburton Community Foundation

ASHBURTON, NEW ZEALAND – A major roadblock for local youth seeking employment and independence is being cleared, thanks to a wonderful new community partnership. Y Drive (the driving school of The Y Central South Island) is proud to announce it has been awarded substantial funding from the Advance Ashburton Community Foundation. This incredible milestone will directly sponsor 25 driver licence scholarships for deserving young people across our region.

Obtaining a driver’s licence is a vital rite of passage, yet the financial and logistical barriers can often feel insurmountable for local youth. The combined costs of professional driving lessons, test fees, and finding a safe, reliable vehicle can easily stall a young person’s progress before they even hit the road.

To bridge this gap, Advance Ashburton has generously provided $6,500 through the Neil & Jeanette Sinclair Fund and the Lochhead Charitable Fund. This vital grant will cover the end-to-end costs of achieving a licence, funding 15 Learner Licences and 10 Restricted Licences. Recipients will receive comprehensive professional driving instruction, mentored practice, and the financial peace of mind needed to step up to their tests with confidence.

“A driver’s licence is so much more than just a piece of plastic; it is a key to independence, safety, and a bright future,” says Sharyn Kake, Manager Driving & Employment Pathways of the Y Central South Island. “In a rural region like ours, public transport options are limited. Without a licence, young people can be locked out of job opportunities, apprenticeships, and higher education. We are incredibly grateful to Advance Ashburton and their amazing donors for recognizing this need and investing so deeply in our youth.”

Advance Ashburton Community Foundation has a proud history of fostering local prosperity by connecting generous donors with vital community causes. By backing the Y Drive initiative, the Foundation is directly breaking down systemic barriers for Mid Canterbury’s next generation.

The 25 scholarships will be rolled out over the coming months, warmly welcoming young people who face genuine hardship or lack the support networks typically required to learn to drive. Through Y Drive’s proven, encouraging framework, students will master both the essential theory and practical road skills. Guided by qualified and highly supportive Driving Instructors, they will transform into safe, responsible road users who contribute positively to the overall safety of the Mid Canterbury community.

As local industries continue to call for licensed, reliable workers, this initiative represents a true win-win for both our youth and the local economy.
