Support can reduce stress of exams

It’s that time of year again – NCEA exams are looming, and taiohi across the Central South Island are hunkering down to hit the books. Whether they’re tackling NCEA Level 1, 2, or 3, this period can be pretty stressful for them, but there’s a lot you can do to help ease the pressure. Here are some practical tips on how to support your young person as they navigate their year-end exams.
Create a Study-Friendly Environment
The right environment can make all the difference when it comes to effective study. Ensure they have a quiet, comfortable space with minimal distractions. A good desk, a supportive chair, and decent lighting can help keep them focused. While it’s tempting for them to study in bed or with their phone within arm’s reach, encouraging a dedicated study space can improve concentration.
Help Them Build a Study Plan
Time management is key when it comes to exam prep. Sit down with them and help map out a study timetable that covers all their subjects and leaves room for breaks. Make sure they start revision early rather than cramming the night before! A good study plan should space out the workload and mix up subjects to keep things fresh.
Encourage them to break tasks into manageable chunks, and set specific goals for each session. For example, “Today I’ll study algebra” is less effective than “Today I’ll master quadratic equations.”
Encourage Balance – Study, Rest, and Fun
While exam prep is important, balance is essential. If they’re feeling overwhelmed, remind them it’s okay to take a breather. These breaks can be anything from a quick walk outside to hanging out with friends for an hour. Make sure they’re eating well, drinking plenty of water, and getting a good night’s sleep too. Late-night study sessions might seem like a rite of passage, but sleep is critical for memory retention and mental clarity.
Offer Emotional Support
The stress of exams can be tough on mental health. Remind them that NCEA exams are important but not the be-all and end-all of their future. Avoid putting extra pressure on them to achieve certain grades. Instead, focus on effort and progress—recognise the hard work they’re putting in, regardless of the results. A simple “I’m proud of how hard you’re working” or “You’ve got this!” can boost their confidence.
Support with Resources
If they’re struggling with particular subjects, help them access additional resources. This could mean looking into online tutorials and NCEA past papers. There are also excellent apps and websites like StudyIt, which is designed specifically for NCEA students and offers heaps of useful content and exam prep tips. Supporting your taiohi through NCEA exam prep means creating an environment where they can thrive and feel emotionally supported. Encourage healthy study habits, make sure they’ve got the resources they need, and remind them to take care of themselves too. By being patient and positive, you’ll help them head into their exams feeling more prepared and confident.
