The Y Commits to Empowering Twizel’s Youth for Three More Years

March 26, 2026

The young people of Twizel and their families are set to benefit from continued, dedicated support as The Y Central South Island (The Y) proudly announces a three-year funding commitment to sustain its vital youth development programs in the Mackenzie community.

The commitment follows a successful first year where The Y established a tangible presence in Twizel, proving the positive impact of dedicated youth support. The Y’s ongoing mission is clear: Whakamana Takata, Whakamana Taiohi | Through empowering the mana of people, we empower the mana of youth.

Just one year ago, The Y recognized the need for better support for taiohi (young people) and whānau (families) in Twizel. The commitment became a reality with the employment of Hanna Devries, a youth worker based in Twizel, as a 30-hour per week position.

“Having Hanna, a familiar face from the community, has allowed us to move beyond our initial commitment into real, sustained impact,” said Jessica Thomas, Senior Manager, Youth & Community Development for The Y Central South Island. The dedicated resource has allowed The Y to deliver a diverse range of activities, including Community Play, Active Recreation and Sport, Holiday Programmes, Driver Education and Licence Support, and one-on-one Youth Work with Twizel Area School students.

The Y’s mahi in Twizel is championed by Jessica Thomas, herself an ex-Twizel Area School student. Her deep connection to the town fuels the organization’s desire to empower and provide opportunities for its young people. Ms. Thomas was quick to acknowledge the essential role of local partnerships. “Every little bit goes a long way,” she stated. “We are extremely grateful for the donations and support we have received from individuals, businesses, and particularly the Mackenzie District Council (MDC) since establishing a physical presence here. “Currently, The Y is co-located in the Twizel Event Centre with MDC staff, a partnership facilitated by Jarred Gravatt, Team Leader of the MDC Community Development team. “Jarred and the MDC have been instrumental in embedding The Y and providing a space for our programmes to grow from,” Ms. Thomas added.

The positive momentum led to a major announcement earlier this month: the NZ Lotteries Grant Board through their community funding has granted three-year funding to support The Y’s ongoing work. While this funding doesn’t cover the full operational cost, it provides a crucial foundation, securing The Y’s ability to keep Hannah Devries active in the community. “This three-year funding is a game-changer,” said Hanna Devries. “It provides the stability we need to plan long-term and really deepen our connection with our taiohi, whānau, and hapori (community). We are excited to keep exploring new opportunities based on what our young people tell us they need.” The Y is committed to Investing in the Next Generation and views its investment in Twizel as equally vital.
